The real 30-day impound hold rule in Lakeside

Search "car impound 30 day hold" and you'll find networks that treat it as a universal rule, every towed car locked up for a month no matter what happened. That's not how it works in Richmond. The 30-day figure is real, but it applies to one specific category: under the city's own towing contract, a vehicle can be held 30 days when it's impounded for a DUI arrest or an equipment violation, one of several distinct trigger categories the city defines alongside abandoned vehicles, accident tows, stolen vehicles, and cars with three or more unpaid tickets. If your car was towed for something else, a parking violation, a private-property trespass tow, an abandoned-vehicle call, that 30-day figure doesn't apply to you, and you're not locked out for a month by default. What actually governs release timing for those other tows is Virginia's lien-and-notice framework: under § 46.2-644.01, the storage facility holding your car has to notify DMV within 7 business days of taking possession, so DMV can check for an existing lien, and once DMV notifies you or a lienholder of that, you have 10 business days from the notice to reclaim the car before the facility can move toward enforcing its lien. Separately, if your car was removed from private property under § 46.2-1215 after sitting more than 72 hours without consent, state law requires it be held at least 60 days, after a diligent search and notice, before it can be finally disposed of, that's a minimum hold before disposal, not before you're allowed to pick it up. Storage itself has a real ceiling: on a lien-titled vehicle, charges can't exceed $500 under § 46.2-644.01, and for a car with no existing lien, the cap is the car's own value under § 8.01-419.1.
