What happens if you don't pay impound in Midlothian

Virginia doesn't publish one universal countdown before an unpaid, unclaimed tow turns into a lost car, but state law does guarantee two real clocks. Under § 46.2-644.01, the storage facility, garage, or tow operator holding your car, the "keeper", has to notify DMV within 7 business days of taking possession, so DMV can check for any existing lien. Once DMV notifies you or a lienholder of that, you have 10 business days from the notice to reclaim the vehicle before the keeper can move to enforce its lien under § 46.2-644.03, or relinquish the vehicle under § 46.2-644.04. Separately, if the tow came off private property under § 46.2-1215, after the car sat more than 72 hours without consent, state law requires the vehicle be held at least 60 days, following a diligent search for the owner and any lienholders and proper notice, before it can be finally disposed of, and the disposition has to be reported to DMV. The bill itself has a real ceiling too: storage charges on a lien-titled vehicle can't exceed $500 under § 46.2-644.01, and for a vehicle with no existing lien, the cap is the vehicle's own value under § 8.01-419.1. Virginia's statewide rule also guarantees no storage charge at all for the first 24 hours a car sits, under § 46.2-1233.1. Richmond's own contracted lot at Seibert's Towing, and each county's own approved operators, bill their local daily rate on top of that floor, so confirm the current number directly rather than assuming a figure. If the charges look wrong, an operator that collects more than its posted fee list is violating § 46.2-1231, and that's worth reporting to local police.
