Does a dead hybrid or plug-in hybrid need a flatbed?
Usually, a dead hybrid or plug-in hybrid should travel with all four wheels off the road. Follow another method only when its exact manual approves it. Rolling driven wheels turn the motor-generator through the transaxle even when the car is powered off.
Why a hybrid is not a conventional gas car
- A hybrid’s electric motor-generator is geared to the wheels through the transaxle. Road rotation therefore turns the drive unit with the car powered off.
- For towing, that connection makes even a front-drive hybrid behave like AWD. Do not assume its gas engine makes wheel-down transport harmless.
- Common Toyota, Ford, and Lexus planetary e-CVT systems have no clutch that fully disconnects the drive unit. Selecting Neutral does not make driven wheels free for transport.
- A two-wheel setup is wrong when it lifts only the non-driven rear wheels. The driven front wheels still roll, just as they do with a wheel lift on the wrong end.
- The 12V accessory battery usually powers shifting, latches, and the electronic parking brake. A hybrid that cannot enter Neutral may need a battery boost to release controls.
- A PHEV uses the same wheel-connected drive unit. Its larger traction battery and charge port do not change the transport method.
Equipment for a powered-off hybrid
- A flatbed is the standard setup because it carries all four vehicle wheels.
- A wheel lift needs dollies under the other axle so no vehicle tire rolls on the road.
- A jump pack may restore shifting or parking-brake controls. It does not make wheel-down towing acceptable.
- Loading skates can move a hybrid whose electronic brake or wheels remain locked.
What to say before the operator comes
- Unplug a PHEV and stow its charge cable before loading begins.
- Find the towing section for the exact year, make, model, and trim.
- Say whether the car powers up, shifts into Neutral, and rolls freely.
- State that all four wheels need support unless that manual says otherwise.
- Keep the key available, but do not force the shifter or parking brake.
Neutral does not disconnect the drive unit
Driven wheels can spin the motor-generator and e-CVT while the hybrid is off. The wrong wheel-lift or dolly arrangement can damage the drive unit even when the dashboard shows Neutral.
Hybrid and PHEV towing questions
Does a dead Prius or RAV4 Hybrid need a flatbed?
Plan on a flatbed unless the exact owner’s manual approves another method. All four wheels should stay off the road during transport.
Does Neutral disconnect a hybrid e-CVT?
No. In a planetary hybrid transaxle, Neutral does not provide a clutch that fully separates the driven wheels from the drive unit.
Can a two-wheel dolly carry a front-drive hybrid?
Not when it lifts only the rear wheels and leaves the driven front wheels rolling. Use equipment that keeps every wheel off the road unless the manual permits otherwise.
Why won’t my dead hybrid shift or release its parking brake?
The 12V accessory battery often powers those controls. Ask about a proper battery boost rather than forcing the shifter or brake.
Is towing a plug-in hybrid different from towing a hybrid?
No. Both have a motor-generator connected to the wheels, so both need the same all-wheels-off-road approach.
Does the charge port or traction-battery size change towing?
No. Unplug and stow the cable before loading, but the plug and larger battery do not change the transport method.
Talk it through with an operator
Have the year, make and model ready, whether the vehicle rolls and steers, where it is parked, and where it needs to go.
